2002 GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL COOK-OFF
The Gilroy Garlic Festival is an annual event pitting the Finalists against each other in an open-air cook-off that takes place in front of crowds of festivalgoers.
CCCentral was well-represented in the Finals by members Ruth Kendrick of Ogden, Utah, Elaine Sweet of Dallas, Texas, and Beth Royals (Richmond, Va.)... who won the cook-off with her recipe for crab cakes. The 8 Finalists were given red-carpet treatment from everyone in town. Even the local grocery store lent a hand. "The manager had called me a week before to see what I needed," Ruth reported. "He had it there -- enoki mushrooms, Thai basil, fresh crab meat. They have such beautiful herbs in California. I can see why they have so much fun cuisine there -- so many great, fresh ingredients."
The Finalists were also given the services of a cook-off helper. "She would find ingredients for you, and could help with basic prep at the cookoff," Ruth said. "She washed dishes, and was a runner to the fridge and such for you. She couldn’t cook, but could peel carrots and help in the prep." Finalists were allowed to begin cooking at 8:30 a.m. and were all assigned presentation times. The awards were handed out at 1 p.m.
"What a great weekend!" Ruth said. "That town really knows how to have a fun cookoff."
