| Backstage at the 2006 Pillsbury Bake-off |
The Pillsbury Bakeoff is
the mother of all cooking contests and the 2006 event was no different...with a
cool $1 million Grand Prize.
But even if you don't win the big money, just being a Finalist is a prize in
its own right. Just ask anyone who has ever been chosen to attend several days
of fun and competition in the contest.
Since CCC began in 1997 we have always proudly claimed many members who are
Pillsbury finalists and this year we did it again.
In all, we had 25+ members of the 100 total number in
the final bake-off. Those
individuals
noted below were all CCC category winners at this year's bake-off.
Congratulations to all..........
In this year's recap we've added Clickable Links to Pictures, Newspaper articles, TV
coverage, etc. so you can experience or relive the recipe contest which some
call the "big dance".
Several members took the time to jot down some words describing
their experience and to share what it's like to attend the creme de la creme of
cooking contests.
We've been fortunate that several finalists brought digital cameras and took
some great pictures.
Because of their desire to share the experience, they allowed us to post them
for your viewing. You can find them here:

This was my second time and the events didn't disappoint. Well,
maybe just a tiny bit re not winning $$....but then I didn't have great
aspirations of doing so. And I was so happy for our groups winners, especially
Anna. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL.
I did have great expectations of meeting all those CCC members I'd not met
before. Not a single one of YOU disappointed me. Somehow I missed chatting with
a couple of you simply because we kept missing connections. It surely wasn't
intentional on my part. I looked at every badge trying to recognize names. Even
when we took our CCC picture not all of our group was present. Then we had to
rush away to get ready for our afternoon activities, so we STILL didn't get to
mingle. I ran so late during the competition that most everyone was finished and
gone before I signed out. And since we weren't allowed to bring anything onto
the Bake-Off floor, I couldn't remember where everyone's range was located.
(barely remembered my name)
As expected, I cried as we did our Grand March and the first thing I requested
from my runner, Amy, was a kleenex.
As for my entry....My first batch looked pretty. Because of the darker pans, it
cook faster and darker but we were required to bake our first batch exactly
according to our original recipe. I figured I should lower my baking temp and
increase baking time for the subsequent batches ,which we were allowed to do.
That first batch LOOKED beautiful. My second batch - not as pretty - went into
the oven as soon as my first came out. My game plan was to cut and plate each
batch as they cooled. Eventually I'd have all three cooled, cut and arranged and
would then decide which batch went where. Just as I was cutting that first batch
a reporter came up to film, distracting me. I didn't know I was distracted until
I realized I'd cut my bars into the wrong number of pieces - 32 rather than 36
like my entry said. So I had to use that first batch for samples. With my last
batch still in the oven and only 2 hours to go it dawned on me it wouldn't be
cool enough to cut in time. I even walked around the Bake-Off floor waving my
pan up and down to speed cooling! So I cut and plated my second batch (not as
pretty) and took it to the judges, figuring the third one wouldn't matter if it
were still slightly warm for photos. OK, I'm not attempting to make excuses (I
screwed up) but my best batch didn't see the judges and vice versa.
As for the Pillsbury/General Mills folks, they were totally wonderful, as were
the other grocery/retail representatives and most of the media - both print and
TV. The activities were tons of fun. The meals were frequent, bountiful and
delicious. It's diet time again! The Gaylord Palms resort was completely
unbelievable! I've tried to describe it to my family and nothing does it justice
- including photos. There is simply nothing to compare it to.
I salute the Pillsbury/General Mills folks who managed to not only pull off the
venue and logistical changes on short notice last fall, but truly "did it up
right"!!!
Like a few others, this was my second Bake-Off also. I talked to my daughter
this morning and we vowed we will both work really hard to go next time. If
EITHER of us make it our one remaining time, we will BOTH go - one as a guest if
necessary. (all for one and one for all kind of thing).
The dog was thirlled to see us when we returned late last night. It was good to
sleep in my own bed and not be awakened before daylight to bone-jarring rap
music - the station my husband chose on our alarm to be sure we would get up at
5 a.m. Then this afternoon I got a call from one local TV station who wants me
to be on their morning show tomorrow, so I need to be there at 5:15 a.m. (So
much for sleeping in two days in a row).
I wonder what I'm going to cook for dinner tonight. There's no lavish buffet,
not to mention steel band or conga music in the background. lol I've become very
spoiled.
Aahh, well.....back to reality.
p.s. Half asleep on the plane trip home last night, I began to make notes of
recipe ideas for the next Bake-Off. Isn't it funny how in that "dream state" you
come up with some creative ideas? |

Second time around was just as fun! The Gaylord Palms Resort couldn’t
have been a more perfect location for the bake-off, what a sight to see! The
grounds of the hotel were absolutely beautiful. As you walk through the
hotel, fresh flowers, lush green plants and dough boy signs line the
walkways. My husband and I particularly enjoyed the alligator pond, where
you could watch alligators, turtles and fish swim around right in the middle
of the hotel. As we walked upstairs to register, the camera crews were
already hard at work, interviewing finalists. They had signs of all of the
100 recipes on posters lining the registration area for all to see. We were
greeted with a great BIG Pillsbury bag with all kinds of goodies such as a
coupon for free cookware, Pillsbury toys, keychains, bakeware, all kinds of
sponsor food products, hats pens, even a little disposable Pillsbury camera!
It was time to get ready for the big first dinner. They had a huge ballroom
set up for the big night. As we walked in, I immediately saw familiar
friends from the last bake-off. It was so nice to see the people we chit
chat with online in person! Dinner was great, we stuffed ourselves like
pigs. There were 4 courses, all were fantastic. My husband even tried duck
confit and liked it! I was cracking up! We took lots of pictures and had a
great time chatting with everyone!
The next morning was a great buffet breakfast in the ballroom where the
awards show was going to be held. Giant TV screens, bright lights and
Pillsbury Logos were front and center. The camera crews taped us all dishing
out our breakfast and scurrying to our seats. After breakfast, the finalists
all had an orientation about the Bake-off day. We walked into the ballroom
and got to see all of the ovens lined up and ready to go. Lots of picture
taking and excitement in that room! After all questions were answered, it
was time to take our finalist picture. We donned our aprons and tried to
line up shortest to tallest. They finally got us order and took a gazillion
pictures of us! The CCC’ers who stayed around had a group photo as well.
Later that afternoon, my husband and I chose to go to Disney’s Animal
Kingdom. We only had a few hours, so we headed for their newest
rollercoaster. We did some shopping, watched the parade then headed back to
the bus.
Later that evening we had a buffet style dinner outside by the pool. Mr. and
Mrs. Pillsbury were greeting guests. Tori Johnson and I quickly got pictures
with both of them! They were so cute and sweet. Dinner was great!
The next morning was a 6:30am breakfast before the bake-off. We were all
excited to get cooking! After breakfast, we all gathered outside to get
ready for our Grand March! With all of our guests cheering us on, we began
our march. As we got closer to the ballroom, music, camera’s and the media
filled the room to cheer us on. We filed in to our ovens ready to begin! I
enjoyed watching all of the activity going on all around the room. I
couldn’t have been happier how my dish turned out. . Truly an amazing day!
The display table looked great with everyone’s finished recipes. Those
judges had a very difficult decision.
What a great party after the bake-off. We salsa danced the night away with
the dough boy at Bongo’s Cuban Café. The food and music was great, we all
let our hair down and “tried” to dance like the dancers from Bongo’s!
The next morning, we were off to breakfast and the awards show. It was
treated as a live TV show, so we were prepped on how to act. Joy Baher was a
terrific host. It was all so exciting. Of coarse we would all have liked to
win, but the truth is, prize winner or not, Pillsbury really shows you a
great time! Hats off to Anna, how exciting! It was so much fun spending time
with the CCC members and other finalists, I know that we are all anxious to
try again next time!! Truly an unforgettable time!

Nobody throws a party like Pillsbury,
as was once again evident from
the moment we entered the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando. The huge,
lavish resort was like its own little city, offering beautiful
expanses of colorful flowers, waterfalls, alligators, exquisite pools
and eateries ~ including an indoor 60-foot sailboat bar/restaurant.
The dinners and parties were breathtaking with settings that ranged
from elegant ballrooms to evening-lit poolside tables to the
pulsating Bongo Cuban Cafe, fully staffed with 'hot' servers and
dancers (as described by my daughters.)
The special day we all live for ~ the actual Pillsbury Bake-Off ~ was
held in a huge room filled not only with rows and rows of kitchen
equipment, but more energy and excitement than I'd ever think
imaginable. It's wonderful to get such a "high" from something so
basic and wholesome as cooking.
Since this was my third and final appearance as a Pillsbury Bake-Off
finalist, it was even more memorable to share it with some very
special people. I was accompanied, cheered on by, kept laughing and
given constant TLC by two of my best friends on earth ~ two of my
three daughters. The youngest was unable to get away from school,
but I wore her picture near my heart, so I felt that she was with me
too.
The icing on the cake was having the pleasure and honor of meeting so
many CCCr's and finally being able to put faces to names. I am so
proud to be a part of such a talented, warm group of people who share
my passions and obsessions. The Pillsbury Bake-Off has truly been a
highlight of my life and I wish each one of you the opportunity to
experience it. |

This was my first time so I had no idea what to expect, but I can tell you it
was truly the experience of a lifetime. Everyone who has posted has done a great
job of describing the sequence of events as well as the thrill of meeting CCCr’s
face to face! I think we will have many new recruits as well! In addition to
what everyone else has already said I will tell you that it was a very
emotional, exhilarating and exhausting 4 days. Part of that was the high sense
of anticipation and enjoyment the whole time – the rest could probably be
attributed to the fact that I was still on Kansas time and so breakfast at 6:15
in Florida is pretty darn early for someone who is not a morning person! Also
the constant camera attention played into it – I have never ever put that much
thought and energy into getting ready to go somewhere every day – yikes! About
Tuesday afternoon when we were getting ready to go to dinner I told my Mom that
if I always had to work that hard to get ready I would never ever go anywhere.
As it was despite my efforts I don’t think I’ll even be on the Food Network
special – although I do remember them filming my feet once.J Even with the
hectic pace and emotions the funny thing is I never really felt tired - in fact
I could hardly sleep at all. But then after the Bakeoff itself – when my 3rd
batch was done – I thought I could have just laid my head down on my range and
slept amidst all the hoopla. I noticed a lot of finalists checked out
immediately after cooking – before the 1:00 ending time – and I started to do
the same because all I wanted to do was get out of there, but I stopped short of
the checkout table and decided to stay on the floor and walk around a bit. I was
glad I did because I was able to sample many of the delicious recipes – looking
especially for CCC friends, of course! I did taste Anna’s stuffing – it was very
tasty – but I did not taste the chicken because the sample wasn’t cut and
believe it or not I didn’t have the energy to cut it! That’s how simply drained
I was! Anyway – it was a great time and we were treated like royalty – I
especially liked my handsome little runner who was so attentive during the
Bakeoff it was almost comical! And the highlight for me was that the owner of
our local grocery store chain came with his wife and was my best cheerleader –
they were such a nice couple and were obviously being happily wined and dined as
well – he is in his 70’s and has been in the grocery business all his life but
this was his first time going to the Bakeoff. That was so special to me that
they were there supporting me and the other Kansas finalist, Ann Hobert – it
just touched my heart! He could come on the floor so he kept checking on me and
reporting back to my mom – so cute! OK – that’s it - I had better leave room for
someone else – so there’s my take on it all!!! |

From beginning to end…this was truly a phenomenal trip.
General Mills is wonderful, paying attention to even the smallest details. This
was my second trip to the Bake-Off and as such I got to see some familiar faces
as well as meet many wonderful new people. I did meet some CCCer’s, though not
as many as I had hoped. The entire event is go, go, go with scheduled events
happening constantly (and I was dealing with a lack of sleep before I arrived).
I swore that this trip was going to be a relaxing fun vacation with my husband
Lee and that I would not get too stressed out. HA! No chance!!! I don’t think
it’s possible not to get fired up while you’re there.
On the day of the Bake-Off, I got very emotional during the Grand March (just
like last time)…there is just sooooo much tradition associated with this event
and it’s really exciting to be a part of it. When I got to my oven I had a bit
of paralysis and doing simple things seemed to take forever. In my original
recipe my instructions say to “heat the iron skillet till smoking” before adding
the chorizo…well, I did, and then with the addition of garlic and sherry someone
said “it looked like the Atomic Bomb going off”. I had mentioned this “smoking
thing” to a Bake-Off member previous to the competition (because I had smoked
out my local ABC crew while cooking my recipe at home a couple of months ago). I
was assured that the ventilation was good and that I didn’t have to worry about
disturbing the people around me. However, immediately after the mushroom cloud
left the stove top, a woman from General Mills came over and said “Now, I don’t
know how you do this at home, but we’re lucky that the sprinkler system didn’t
go off…please try to tone it down”. Until she mentioned this, setting off the
sprinkler system was NOT something I was worried about. I am so thankful that I
didn’t become infamous for being the woman who single handedly destroyed the
42nd Bake-Off. All in all, I was quite happy with the dish I submitted to the
judges. I thought it tasted very good (as far as I could tell, my taste buds
seem to not work when I get stressed) and looked pretty as well (my tortilla
bowls turned out perfectly). So I am happy to say that I truly did the best I
could and was happy with what I turned in. Like all big days that you look
forward to for eons, it was all over in a flash making me both happy and sad at
the same time. I was so exhausted that I collapsed on the bed in a heap…apron on
and all.
It was so nice to meet everyone…and I hope that each and every one of you
reading this gets to experience the Bake-Off at least once in your life (and
hopefully more). This is a budding hobby for many of us and I am not surprised
in the least bit as to why we are all hooked. This is what life should be
like…pursuing fun things and enjoying your journey. Congratulations to ALL the
Pillsbury winners (I include each of the 100 Bake-Off finalists in this group)
and I hope everyone enjoys many years of continued cooking and baking success!!! |

Hi Fellow CCC members!
The 42nd Pillsbury Bake Off has truly been a
wonderful experience from beginning to end. The Gaylord Palms Resort was
exquisite and decorated like the Everglades, on the INSIDE! From the moment
I arrived at the hotel, the Food Network was busy filming me, and asked if
they could film me quite often during the Bake Off. They really were very
nice, and made me feel comfortable. All of the meals were fabulous, although
I experienced my first "brain freeze" while talking with Tamara Jones of the
Washington Post. She was very nice, and I loved how she worded her article
which ended up on the front page!
I took the trip by myself, which, I think was
better for me because I was able to enjoy the company of Carole Resnick,
Norita Solt, Patrice Hurd, Robin Spires and especially Dianna Wara along
with several others from the forum. Since Dianna and I were there by
ourselves, we "buddied-up" and spent quite a bit of time together, going to
Downtown Disney where Pillsbury gave us a $25 gift check for spending money.
Dianna and I both enjoyed buying souvenirs, taking pictures, and eating a
huge Ghirradelli ice cream cone! We also spent a couple of free-time hours
at the pool together and sat together at Bongo's for the party. Needless to
say, I've truly made a lifelong friend through this forum!
My entry for the Bake Off turned out really
well. I didn't look at my recipe one time during the preparation. My first
entry I used for pictures because it cooked faster than my oven at home, and
I figured that if I turned down the oven 15 degrees, my next batch would
come out perfect. It did, and that batch went to the judges. People kept
asking when I would have samples. My last batch was ready to cut for samples
at about 12:30 so a lot of people had left the floor. I walked around trying
to sample some of the other dishes, and when I got back to my work station,
my 48 samples were practically gone!
The Awards Show was perfection! Joy Behar was
an excellent host, and I was thrilled when they called my Choco-Peanut
Butter Cups as the Simple Snacks Category winner! Wow.....$10,000 and a
beautiful new oven! I just can't believe it all went so smoothly and so
fast!
Congratulations to our own Anna Ginsburg for
winning the big one! Way to go, girl! We are all so happy for you
This Bake Off Contest has definitely been one
of the biggest highlights in my life, now, back to reality.

Hi Folks!
Nice to meet you all! My husband heard of this website from another
supportive guest at the Pillsbury Bake Off Contest and I thought "ahhh,
my people".
The excitement really begins with the phone call announcing that you are
a finalist. I got the call at work and immediately suffered heart
palpitations, began sweating and realized that my hands were shaking.
The woman on the other end of the line from General Mills was asking me
"have you or anyone in your family worked for or been affiliated
with..." listing off twenty or so different companies. As my coworkers
were gathering around me exclaiming "What? What!", I was answering "No.
No" in response to her questioning. Finally I just said "No, but I hope
you realize that I am only hearing a fraction of what you're saying
because you are giving me a heart attack". She laughed and said "Well,
we can't have that".
After that, you have about six months or so to fantasize and more or
less stew in your own juices. Packets of materials continually arrive
with descriptions of the events to follow and media opportunities to be
had. If you're me (and probably everyone else) you practice your recipe
and elicit responses from people. You start to wonder how you'll
perform at the contest (will you wreck something up?), how you'll
responsibly deal with it if you actually win and how you'll cope and
move forward if you don't. Those anyway were my thought processes as
I'd never been to a cooking contest prior to that, the Pillsbury Bake
Off Contest being the first I'd entered.
I really had no idea what to expect even though I was well communicated
with by General Mills. I think that's partly because it's really hard
to imagine a 4 1/2 acre resort in Orlando with lush plantings of live,
thriving tropical plants (my favorite part) and gators lounging around
on rocks, all enclosed and indoors. Add to that jet lag, an intense
schedule of (alas, it's tough) eating great food and socializing, plus
lack of sleep due to intense excitement and you have a recipe for
absolute exhaustion. There were several times that I felt I was going
to burst into spontaneous tears, one being when we marched onto the
contest floor and were overwhelmed by all the cameras, guests and media
people. When I had completed my recipes and left the contest floor that
day, I was practically limping.
The entire contest was so professionally well run that it was a true
education and fascinating to get an inkling of what it takes to
coordinate a project of that scope and caliber, the announcement of the
winners being the crowning event.. I, like everyone else, was whipped to
a froth as the prizes were awarded and congratulate all the winners on
their accomplishments. Yet I was so tired, I commented to my husband
during breakfast prior to the ceremony, that I didn't know if I cared
anymore about winning. He said "that's just crazy talk, Natalie" and of
course he was right. I would have liked to have won and to a certain
extent have experienced the let down cleverly referred to as "Pillsbury
partum". Part of it however is just that I have to wait a whole two
more years to try my hand again. |

MEMBER COMMENTS:
Hey CCC members,
Better late.... It has taken me the last two
weeks to just recover from the festivities! First I have to say that I am a
fairly (okay, very) reserved person, but when I arrived at the beautiful Gaylord
Palms hotel and started following the life sized doughboy signs which were
pointing the way to the PBO check-in area, I had to restrain myself from
skipping along the path and down the hallway! Everyone and everything was
fabulous. The hotel itself was a treasure chest of little surprises. The atrium
which covered several acres was full of ferns and orchids and palm trees, a
horticultural heaven! At night they tuned on mist machines and tapes of chirping
crickets and frogs, hidden somewhere under the fronds. The rooms had balconies
which overlooked this little bit of Eden. Oh, and did anyone mention, it has
it's own little Godiva store! Truffles in paradise! All the Pillsbury staff were
fantastic, and when I tell people about meeting the Pillsburys, everyone says
"you mean there are actually people still around named Pillsbury?" The "hoopla"
was truly overwhelming for me. If I had not "known" some CCC friends to look
for, I would never have enjoyed it as much as I did. I felt as though I had a
lifeline in a sea of craziness. Even so, by the final morning I was actually
praying that my name NOT be called. I could never have gotten on a plane to go
anywhere but home. I am now getting over the BakeOff Blues or Post Pillsbury
depression or whatever we are calling it, and must admit that I have already
started mulling over ideas for next time.
I have a plan, if I ever get "the call" again, I will go into serious physical
training right away, then I will beg my doctor for some kind of "nerve pills" to
save my (or my husband's) sanity! My husband is all for this plan (the
medication). After he had to hold me back the day after we returned home from
Orlando, and the clerk at the photo counter told me the last pic on my roll
could not be printed. When anyone who cared to look could clearly see on the
negative that this was the photo of me poking the doughboy in the belly! I
currently have some photo experts looking into this situation.
All kidding aside, I will never forget this
experience and all the people who were a part of it. |
