Cooking Contest Central is hosting an official qualifying event for the 2026 World Food Championships. The Vegetarian Taco Challenge will run from August 1-14, 2026, and one lucky member will receive a coveted golden ticket to compete at the World Food Championships in Indianapolis this October!

Cooking Contest Central’s owner and CEO, Brittany Furbee, has been competing in the World Food Championships for 10 years. Here are her top reasons why home cooks should throw their hat in the ring and compete at the world’s largest food sport event.

1. Winning is Big Business: At WFC, professional chefs and home cooks alike go head-to-head in 10 different categories such as bacon, dessert, and noodles. After 2 rounds, a category champion is crowned, and one lucky cook will walk away with a big check for $10,000. However, the fun (and winning) doesn’t stop there. The 10 category champions will then compete against each other at The Final Table to earn more cash, with the winner taking home $100,000!
   
   
2. Anyone Can Win: One of my favorite things about WFC is its contestant diversity. I’ve witnessed professional Michelin star chefs win alongside grandmas and amateur home cooks competing for the first time. The use of the E.A.T. judging methodology, which measures execution, appearance, and taste, creates a level playing field where truly anyone can win. I personally have not won a category event (although I did come in second place with two scores 100 and above! A great story for another day.). I keep coming back because I truly feel like each year, I have a shot at winning despite having no professional training.
   
   
3. The Camaraderie: In case you haven’t noticed, Cooking Competitions are my passion. However, competitive cooking as a hobby is super niche, so it can be hard to find others in your area who share the same interests. WFC brings all the fellow food sport lovers together in one place where we can connect over our shared love of competing. Many people say this event is like a big family reunion. It’s great to reconnect with fellow competitors year after year, many of whom I have now known for over 10+ years. Not to mention the support fellow competitors show each other. If you forget an ingredient during the competition, odds are your neighbors are going to help you out. And when the clock is ticking down and dishes are on their way to be delivered to the final judging table, the red carpet will be lined with fellow competitors cheering you on and rooting for your success.
   
   
4. Networking: In addition to competitors, WFC attracts brands, sponsors, and media outlets from all over the world. If you are running a food product business, blog, or do work as a freelance writer and food photographer, this is the place for you. I’ve made countless connections at WFC over the years that have led to real paying gigs with brands like Walmart, Sam’s Club, Hershey’s, Challenge Butter, the Big 12 Conference, just to name a few. My freelance experience also led to a full-time role at a food and travel magazine. If you’re looking for opportunities in food media, WFC is the place to be to turn your hobby into a career.
   
   
5. Explore New Cities: Each year, competitors travel from across the country (and around the world) to gather in a host city for several days of food, fun, and friendly competition. Many competitors turn the trip into a mini vacation, arriving early or staying a few extra days to experience the local restaurants and attractions. I’ve had the pleasure of attending WFC in Orange Beach, Alabama, Dallas, Texas, and currently Indianapolis, Indiana. I had never been to any of the three destinations, and I loved each one for different reasons. WFC changes its location every few years, and I am always excited to see which destination will be next on the list to explore!
